Stayman over 1NT by Paul Bowyer

In this section we are looking again at Stayman as well as general responses to 1NT. We are also including its use here over 2NT as well as over 1NT.

Assume in all cases that 1NT is 12-14, opening 2NT is 20-22 points.

Question 1

 A 7 4 2
 3 2

Q: 1 -

1NTPass
?
In these hands you are responder. What do you reply to 1NT?

 Your choice:
A: 3. You must play this hand in game but the actual resting place is uncertain. 4 might prove to be better than 3NT or vice versa. 3 shows a five-card suit and is forcing (partner cannot Pass). Opener must convert to 3NT (with only two Spades) or raise to 4 with three or more trumps.

Question 2

 A 7 4 2
 K 2

Q: 2 -
SouthWestNorthEast
1NTPass
?
What do you reply to 1NT?

 Your choice:
A: 4. You don't need to enlist partner's help here - you know of at least an eight-card Spade fit between the two hands (and game-going values). There's no need to pick the daisies, just proceed immediately to the obvious destination.

 Q 9 6 2

Q: 3 -
SouthWestNorthEast
1NTPass
?
What do you reply to 1NT?

 Your choice:
A: 2. Now you want to locate a possible 4-4 Spade fit. Stayman will help you do this - if it exists. If opener bids 2 you will raise (of course) to 4. If opener bids 2 or 2 you will take a risk on the Hearts and bid 3NT.

Question 4

 J 9 4
 10 7 6 3
 2

Q: 4 -
SouthWestNorthEast
1NTPass
?
What do you reply to 1NT?

 Your choice:
A: 2. A standard "weakness-takeout" or sign-off. You don't fancy 1NT and 2 looks to be a better spot. There's no point in bidding Stayman - why bother? Partner will, of course, Pass 2 as he's been told to shut up.

Question 5

 10 7 6
 8 2

Q: 5 -
SouthWestNorthEast
1NTPass
?
What do you reply to 1NT?

 Your choice:
A: Pass. A 4-4 major fit will prove better than 1NT if it exists. However, you cannot risk bidding Stayman with this hand. If partner now bids 2 what are you going to do then? On this type of hand you just have to Pass 1NT and take your medicine.

Question 6

 J 9 4 3 2
 10 6
 8 2

Q: 6 -
SouthWestNorthEast
1NTPass
?
What do you reply to 1NT?

 Your choice:
A: 2. Now you can afford to try Stayman. If opener bids a major you know you have located a fit (and you Pass, of course). If opener replies 2 you'll just have to bid 2 but you'll have lost nothing in trying. 2 in this sequence would still be a sign-off.

Question 7

 10 6 3 2
 8 2

Q: 7 -
SouthWestNorthEast
2NTPass
?
What do you reply to a 2NT opening bid?

 Your choice:
A: 3. Over 2NT there is simply no way of signing off with a bad hand. With abject weakness you just have to Pass. A bid of 3 or 3 shows a hand like this - a five-card suit and values for game. (opener has 20-22, remember). Partner either raises or bids 3NT according to how many of your suit he has.

What do you reply to a 2NT opening bid?

 Your choice:
A: 3. This is Stayman. You want to discover if there is a 4-4 Heart fit. If opener replies 3 you raise to 4 - if opener denies a major with 3 or if he bids 3 (denying Hearts) you just convert to 3NT.

What do you reply to a 2NT opening bid?

 Your choice:
A: 3. You can still apply Stayman with this hand. If opener responds 3 or 3 you raise to game (obviously). If opener bids 3 you follow with 3, showing a five-card suit. Opener now has the choice of bidding 3NT or of supporting your suit (don't worry! He won't Pass).

Question 10

Here you are the opening 2NT bidder. What is your next move?

 Your choice:
A: 4. To invoke Stayman partner simply must have a four-card major (why bother otherwise?). He obviously hasn't got four Hearts so he must have four Spades. 4 may prove to be a lot better contract than 3NT (which may fail on a Club lead, for example).
